Powercats are coming…

Catana Group, possibly the most dynamic multihull builder worldwide, decided to diversify in the large—and growing fast in Europe—powerboat arena. After twenty-two years, Olivier Poncin, the head of Catana, entrusted our office with developing new vessels.

The range of smaller, outboard-powered catamarans, was primarily focused on European markets, unlike previously where such boats were mostly designed for American daytrip boaters. Boating culture and the expectations of clients in Europe are different. While deck layout needs to offer a similar daily fun/entertainment/socializing program, the accommodation also needs to offer enough for a weekend—or a whole week—of cruising comfort. The hulls can offer slightly less top speed, but need to be fuel efficient and safe.

The smallest model, the YOT 35 O.B. (outboard) is only 10 m long and just under 4 m wide, allowing it to find a mooring in limited berth widths around Europe. The deck has a bow cockpit and aft deck with a variety of uses for bathing and socializing, for a family or for numerous guests. Ease of accessing the water, the dinghy or the shore is studied carefully, and so is protection from the sun (when needed), spray or wind. The central steering area can be isolated to allow air conditioning—or heat—in less-than-moderate weather conditions. The interior can sleep three to four people in two cabins, and there are two ensuite bathrooms.

Many new and innovative features on and below deck are designed to match the future expectations of European boaters. The accumulated experience of the office in the build process should provide value to Catana yard—and allow the client to come back to our office, trusting in our mutual success.
