Japec and Jernej Jakopin/ Studio J&J Design Awarded in Amsterdam

On November 20th Boat Builder Awards 2024 (organised by METSTRADE/RAI, ICOMIA and IBI, see below) were named at a dinner and ceremony in Amsterdam at the National Maritime Museum. This year’s 10th anniversary event saw the Jakopin brothers commended as Designers of the Year. The award highlights their four decades of contributions to boat design and production, spanning hundreds of projects and hands-on work across the marine industry.

The judges summary:

Japec and Jernej Jakopin have been a major force in the world of design and boat production since 1983. Their company, J&J Design, has been involved with close to 400 projects from 70 boatbuilders across 30 countries, resulting in the production of 75,000 boats and yachts from 10m to 150m in length. Today its office has 24 naval architects, designers and engineers, and operates a tooling, milling and prototyping operation with 45 technicians and two 20 metre milling machines.

While our Designers of the Year have received credit for many innovative projects, they have also had significant behind-the-scenes input on other production boats. Japec and Jernej have deep hands-on knowledge of all elements of boat production and were early pioneers in carbon epoxy and hybrid power technologies. The judges are pleased to honour the Jakopin brothers for their remarkable career and influence across a wide part of the boatbuilding industry.”

The Boat Building Awards winner in the category Eco-focused Launch of the Year was the Beneteau Group  Island Cruising Concept.

The concept was created by Beneteau Group and the naval architecture was supplied by Marc Lombard Studio. J&J is responsible for  the design, engineering and tooling of this project, and two first prototypes were manufactured by our office. The two first yachts are being used for gathering market feedback in Croatian and BVI Caribbean waters.

J&J are proud to be given the opportunity by Beneteau Group to work on this project. The Island Cruising Concept is a direct development of our conceptual, design and engineering efforts in the field of responsible boating (starting in 2009 with the Greenline 33 Hybrid, and with latest project being BMW/Tyde electric foiling yacht). We are happy to be able to state that  the largest fleet of hybrid/electric boats sailing today was designed and engineered in our office.

The Boat Builder Awards for Business Achievement are organised jointly by METSTRADE Show organiser RAI Amsterdam and IBI publisher Boat International Media.
