The mission of our services is to improve the boating experience of the consumers leading to increased margins, increased market share and increased shareholders’ value of our clients.
The result of our work is seen in happy faces of the boaters using our yachts and in bestsellers manufactured – and sold – by our customers. Extensive communication with the community of the owners of our designs and with the yards(our clients) helps us to understand the current (and hidden) needs of the market and of the boatbuilding industry. J&J has, arguably, a unique and leading position to create new better designs.
J&J Design will conduct a market research for every new project signed. These studies cover the market needs and expectations, product life spans, yard constrictions, sales network and production method efficiency levels. Market research is not limited to existing markets, sales figures and big-data analysis but keeps emphasis on tiny clues and customer behavior properties that lead to important trends and design developments. Clear objective for the client is attained, with efficiency and profitability analysis of correlated processes, all resulting in a product which fits best the end customer and the yard.
This is arguably the most important phase: the definition of a new product or a new range. Innovation based on company’s tradition and strengths while concealing the weaknesses leads to better boating experience, to increased value of the product and increased market share.
The quality and level of design, equally on exterior as inside, is an increasingly important element of the purchase decision. Our in-house designers offer excellent styling work – or, if needed to achieve the desired design flavour, in cooperation with the yard’s styling department or a chosen exterior designer.
Our experience in work with a wide range of world’s best creative design talent assures smooth integration of in-house or exterior design work in the development process.
Our unique 33-year 300-project experience in production power- and sailing yachts connected to extensive tank and field testing, to computer simulations and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) work results in hulls which have less drag, better seaworthiness and handling – while offering more performance, comfort and range.
A new product selling well in a market can earn money for the yard only if production cost is accurately predicted – and kept under control. Preliminary Bills of Materials, of build and assembly manhours are made jointly with the client – and monitored throughout the development and pre-series cycle.
Before any new developments are started an in-depth analysis of the business case and CAPEX involved is needed. Based on unequalled experience in the industry we offer a good insight into the money spent – and expected returns.
A product designed and engineered for production leads to efficient manufacturing and profit margin. Proper integration and optimization of all aspects of engineering is crucial. We are in the best position to apply world’s best practices of technologies and build methods – applied to the client’s best tradition and skills. The products are easy to build – and of unbeatable value.
The best GRP technology – or the best set of technologies – is chosen to arrive to a light, strong and competitive product. Epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester resins with glass, carbon or Kevlar® reinforcements are applied in a range of technologies from prepregs, SPRINT, RTM, resin infusion or hand lay-up as needed.
Our extensive experience throughout the industry leads to better and cost-effective ways to design and engineer these areas. Connected to expertise and tradition of our clients we design innovative solutions which work and are easy to build.
Optimized propulsion system is designed and engineered – from outboard to I/O, inboard straight shaft or V drive and pod systems like IPS or Zeus. J&J has a close relationship with major manufacturers of engines and propulsion gear, including 3D libraries and contacts to appropriate development engineers.
Detailed drawings of woodwork are produced including files for direct application on the wood processing machinery of the client or of the chosen supplier – in the appropriate software. The ownership of these files enables the client to have full freedom in the choice (or transfer) of best supplier.
J&J typically produces detailed wiring diagrams and electrical system drawings enabling the client to execute the out-of-the-boat preparation of the system and efficient assembly. This area is developing fast so latest solutions are used to optimize the product. A permanent supply of AC 220 or 110 V is a necessity – and we have excellent solutions to provide this feature.
Design and engineering of this system offers energy-efficient powered functions throughout the boat.
This area became very important with climatic changes and the general use of air conditioning systems in the life of the modern world. J&J has pioneered the standard use of energy-efficient and reliable household A/C systems on boats, connected to the Lithium battery pack which enables noise- and vibration-less nights in a conditioned environment.
A smooth liaison of your home comforts and the boat calls for a sophisticated, reliable and price-efficient entertainment system which easily integrates all sources of information. Permanent and good-speed internet has the same priority. J&J engineers production-friendly and cost-effective systems which provides the comfort of your home on your boat.
Our expertise lies in understanding small spaces and volumes available on any boat. However, only a mock-up allows to fully understand the validity of design solutions and the best ways how to improve them. We systematically provide and study with our client inexpensive full-scale mock-ups which result in optimized convenient, comfortable and easy-to-build interior solutions lasting the life of the product.
Ergonomics and safety on the boat is our prime concern protecting the boater in all conditions while providing comfort and convenience.
Fast and efficient 3D modeling is necessary to understand and present the volumes and geometries of the yacht. The 3D models range from fast verification of volumes to full definition of milling geometries, solid 3D engineered models and renders needed for marketing or understanding of aesthetic issues. Our capacity and experience in producing these drawings fast and cost-efficiently is adding value to the work for our clients.
Our extensive and in-depth knowledge of efficient purchasing ways and most value-adding components enables our clients to optimize the Billof Materials and build in reliable equipment and materials which add value to the boat. Our support work of the client’s purchasing department leads to increased margin and sales.
A product designed and engineered for efficient production can only shine in adapted production environment. That is why we help our clients to develop purpose/organized production layout and stream which shortens production time and gives yachts of superior quality and reliability.
Efficient in-house GRP production is the key to competitive products under 60 feet. Best solutions are designed and engineered together with the client to obtain optimized technology, product flow and skill set. J&J has rich experience in introducing new technologies to the client, including training and pre-series supervision.
J&J Design introduced the modular build concept in 1985 and has over decades achieved a high proportion of assembly work to be performed outside the boat.
Many major boat builders today use our modular build technology. The customized solution of this system is adapted to the client’s needs – and limitations.
The assembly area is where most man hours can be gained. By removing the assembly work out of the boat less time and less effort are spent while increasing the quality of the yacht. We design dedicated assembly flow streams which give best production result while keeping CAPEX low and taking the existing infrastructural limitations in account.
The production process is broken in phases (up to several hundred) and production time together with necessary skill of the worker is projected. This allows us to evaluate all elements of value stream mapping and optimize the production flow in time and efficiency while reducing the financial impact of production tools and working capital.
Production tools must be engineered to support the designed production process and the products developed for this production process. Our job is to design the tools which are efficient in production, easy to produce and minimize the CAPEX spending.
J&J has been providing the full service package for the production builders since 1990 with over 200 projects of full-scope development from design and engineering to production tooling. Gathered experience unrivalled throughout the industry and the world serving most of world’s top production boatbuilders arguably placed us in a position of the only one-stop-shop in the development of boats and yachts.
Computer-driven milling machines produce precise shapes of plugs or direct molds corresponding to the designed 3D geometries with a typical tolerance of under 1 mm. The plug technologies vary to support the mold quality needed and help reduce CAPEX. The direct molds enable a small trial series of product to be fully tested prior to investing in full-scope molds.
The type and quality of molds are designed to the needs of production. A variety of resin systems (polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy) and reinforcements are used to support different methods of GRP production and to the number of pulls expected from the tool. Our experience from a range of production environments and mold cultures enables us to design the right solution for our clients.
We manufacture all the necessary tools and jigs to support the production process and help achieve the time, cost and quality projected.
In certain cases it is beneficial to build the first yacht in a development environment out of the client’s production process. We can build the prototype, typically involving the teams from the client’s production which will take over the build in the series.
First batch of yachts is built in the production environment of the client. Here we provide support helping to sort out the “teething” issues and get the production efficiency to speed as planned.
Only a well-managed project can keep the time and investment promises. Our vast experience allows our clients to meet the targets even in unpredictable development process of new products involving new technologies or build processes.
We were involved in sales and distribution systems for over three decades. The markets are changing, and so are the ways of bringing the products to them. Evolved or new solutions are designed for our clients giving them more efficient sales system adapted for today’s and future customer needs.
J&J created and developed – and helped to create and develop – many new brands and bestsellers. New products embracing new technologies and design solutions created new functionalities and improved the boating experience of final customers. This typically provided the base for development of a new brand which won the markets – and brought sales, margin and market share to our clients.
