The Yachtsman’s Motoryacht

The Skagen 50 was our second in-house design for a powered vessel and was brought to the world to establish a new brand name.

We wanted to create an innovative motor yacht for seasoned boaters who wished to spend long periods aboard and enjoy their passion on a long-range, fully autonomous small ship. It was clear that interested clients came from both sailing and powerboat experience. The brief was simple: the boat needed to be strong and safe, easy-to-handle, seaworthy in all conditions, comfortable for two couples during lengthier stays aboard, with important long-range capabilities for fuel, food, and other necessities. Quick to maneuver away from bad weather, and at ease at displacement speed of 8,5 knots at 16 liters of fuel per hour.

Skagen 50 was a true modern classic of timeless design. She featured a very low center of gravity, and was directionally stable in all directions and sea states due to her keel. Her deck was very comfortable, and it was easy to move around the boat, with safe access to shore, to dinghy, or to the sea. The vast flybridge area was easily accessed from the steering station in the salon, and when driven by Caterpillar or Yanmar engines, she could achieve 25 knots.

Clients came from the sailing world all over Europe. Skagen 50 won the Boat of the Year award in the UK in 2007, and sales always exceeded build capacity (even now, she looks as good as a quarter-century ago and is a highly sought-after second-hand yacht). Over the next twenty years, virtually every larger European boatbuilder followed the Skagen 50’s lead.

A modern fast “trawler” was born.
